How to Stay Safe and Avoid Getting Hurt from Falls

Accidents can happen unexpectedly, affecting anyone, no matter how old they are or where they are. It’s important to pay attention to falls, especially when it’s icy or snowy outside in the winter. Knowing how to fall safely can help you from getting seriously injured.

If you feel like you might fall, it’s important to stay calm. Tensing up and reaching out with your hands can lead to injuries. Instead of reaching out with your hands, try bending your elbows and knees. This can prevent injuries, especially to your wrists or elbows

Protecting your head during a fall is vital. If falling forward, turning your face to the side helps, while tucking your chin toward your chest can be beneficial if falling backward. Landing on softer body parts like back muscles or thighs can minimize the risk of severe injuries to areas like the tailbone, hips, elbows, or knees.

Additionally, wearing appropriate footwear with good traction, especially during snowy or icy conditions, can significantly reduce the likelihood of slipping and falling.

If you or someone you know experiences a fall and feels pain, it’s important to, seek medical assistance. Consider visiting a chiropractor at Henry J. Austin Center (HJAHC) for adjustments in you’re in pain. You can schedule an appointment by calling 609-278-5900 or visiting henryjaustin.org/services.
