April is National Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Month

April is National Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of early detection in the fight against cancer. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States and can be prevented with regular screenings. As President Biden stated in his proclamation, cancer has impacted nearly every American family, highlighting the urgency of this cause. At Henry J. Austin Health Center (HJAHC), we’re dedicated to empowering patients with the tools they need to stay healthy and prevent cancer.

Why Screening Matters

Screening for cancer is crucial because it allows for the detection of cancer before symptoms appear, increasing the chances of successful treatment. At HJAHC, we offer screenings for the following:

  • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in American women. Our team offers breast scans and will refer patients out to receive a mammogram after determining best options.
  • Screening mammograms are highly effective in detecting breast cancer early, when treatment is most effective.
  • Cervical cancer screening is an important part of routine health care for people who have a cervix. HJAHC offers pap tests/papsmears, tests that can identify abnormal cells in the cervix, which may develop into cancer.
  • HPV tests can also detect the virus responsible for these changes.
  • Colorectal cancer is a disease in which cells in the colon or rectum grow out of control. At HJAHC, ColoFit tests are FREE! After completing the screening, patients will be referred to receive appropriate treatment.

Screening for all types of cancer is very important, which is why it is in patients’ best interest to see their care team regularly.
