Testicular cancer is a topic many men may find uncomfortable to talk about, but it’s important to know about it, especially during Testicular Cancer Awareness Month. At Henry J. Austin Health Center (HJAHC), we’re here to help you understand what testicular cancer is and why catching it early is crucial for your health.
Understanding Testicular Cancer
Testicular cancer mostly affects younger and middle-aged men, typically between 15 to 35 years old. The average age of diagnosis is around 33 years old. Although it’s rare, it can also affect children and older men. It’s more common than you might think, with over 8,500 men diagnosed each year.
One of the main signs is a painless lump in the testicle. Other symptoms may include swelling or changes in size or shape.
The Importance of Early Detection
The good news is that testicular cancer is highly treatable if found early. In fact, it has a cure rate of up to 99% when treated promptly. Factors such as family history, undescended testicles, and genetic predisposition may increase risk.
Risk Factors and Prevention
Certain factors like family history, undescended testicles, and genetics can increase the risk. That’s why it’s essential to perform monthly self-exams. Check out this short video from the Testicular Cancer Society to learn how to do it correctly.
