Hypertension Education Month: Wellness in the City, Trenton in Motion

Warm weather is here and it’s a great time to move! Physical activity can lower your risk of chronic diseases like hypertension by up to 50%. Start small and stay consistent.

¿Qué es la hipertensión?

Hypertension is another name for high blood pressure. Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against your blood vessels.

  • When your blood pressure is too high, your heart has to work harder
  • Over time, this can hurt your heart, brain, and kidneys
  • Many people do not feel sick, so it is important to get checked

¿Quién corre peligro?

You may be at higher risk if you:

  • Are over age 40
  • Have a family history of high blood pressure
  • Eat foods high in salt
  • Do not get enough physical activity
  • Are overweight
  • Smoke or drink too much alcohol
  • Have diabetes or other health conditions

Move Every Day

  • Take a walk: Start with a walk around your block and slowly go farther
  • Create a walking group: Invite friends or family to join and stay motivated
  • Every step counts toward better health

Urban Gardening

  • What it is: Local Trenton community gardens grow fresh vegetables and greens
  • Why it helps: Gardening gives you light exercise while providing healthy foods that can help lower your blood pressure
