Spring Allergy Care for You and Your Family

Spring is a beautiful time in Mercer County. Trees bloom, flowers grow, and the weather finally warms up. But for many people, spring also brings allergies.

If you have a runny nose, itchy eyes, or sneezing, you may have spring allergies.

What causes spring allergies?

Spring allergies are often caused by pollen. Pollen comes from trees, grass, and weeds. When pollen spreads through the air, it can enter your nose and eyes. This can trigger allergy symptoms.

In Mercer County, tree pollen is common in early spring. Grass pollen becomes more common later in the season.

Common symptoms:

Allergy symptoms can feel like a cold, but they last longer. SIgns include:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Itchy or watery eyes
  • Itchy throat or eyes
  • Coughing

How allergies can affect other conditions

Allergies can make other health problems worse. This is important to know.

  • Asthma: Allergies can trigger asthma attacks. This can make it hard to breathe.
  • Sinus infections: A stuffy nose can lead to pressure and infection in the sinuses.
  • Ear infections: Fluid buildup can cause pain and infection, especially in children.
  • Skin conditions: Allergies can worse eczema and cause itching or rashes.

If you already have one of these conditions, managing your allergies can help you stay healthier.

How to reduce symptoms

There are simple steps you can take to feel better:

  • Stay indoors when pollen levels are high
  • Keep windows closed at home and in your car
  • Wash your hands and face after being outside
  • Change clothes after outdoor activities
  • Use over-the-counter allergy medicine if needed

When to see a doctor

If your symptoms are severe or do not go away, it may be time to see a provider. Allergies can affect your sleep, school, and work. A doctor can help you find the right treatment.
