MAJOR FUNCTION:
Under the general direction and supervision of the Chief Medical Officer performs the functions of the Lactation Consultant.  With a focus on detail and accuracy, the Lactation Consultant will provide support for the mother-infant breastfeeding dyad, as well as promote a breastfeeding friendly environment at HJAHC Centering Parenting Program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Works cooperatively with all employees to carry out the goals and objectives of Henry J. Austin Health Center, Inc., according to the established policies and procedures and current initiatives
  • Works closely with Chief Medical Officer and Director of Quality to establish priorities in duties/responsibilities
  • Conducts assessment, planning, interventions, and evaluation of lactation support and education for clients in the postpartum period at HJAHC Centering Parenting Program
  • Facilitates breastfeeding support for postpartum clients in coordination with the HJAHC Centering Parenting Program
  • Supports the efforts to increase breastfeeding support to all newborns in the HJAHC Centering Parenting Program
  • Conducts competency-based employee trainings on infant feeding appropriate to the HJAHC practice
  • Communicates with Pediatricians and GYN providers to improve lactation support for clients who elect to breastfeed
  • Coordinates with Centering Program Coordinator the lactation support schedules
  • Reviews, updates and evaluates suitable educational materials to facilitate understanding, adjusting teaching to meet patient and family needs including language and literacy level.
  • Participates in evaluation of the patient education effectiveness at HJAHC.
  • Documents patient education and progress in accordance with practice standards within the EHR
  • Maintains professional growth in the area of educational techniques to promote quality patient education services
  • Co-Facilitates Centering group as needed
  • Performs all related work as required.

EDUCATION:

  • Certified Lactation Consultant IBCLC Preferable
  • Medical Assistant with Lactation Consultant Certificate.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish required

PREREQUISITES FOR THE JOB:

  • Computer literacy including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to learn and adhere to program structure   
  • At least 6 months-1 year experience coordinating lactation support activities
